Conservation of Globally Significant Biodiversity in the Landscape of Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains

It is a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The project assists the people in the Rhodopes in protecting local nature and working for the economic, cultural and social development of the region.
The goal of the project website is to act as a “clearing house” mechanism, which would help users find in one place useful information related to the Rhodopes. There is information about the agriculture, forestry, livelihoods, tourism and biodiversity in Rhodope Mountains, along with funding opportunities, project documents, publications, assignment announcements and results, links.

Its short title is “Capacity Building for Sustainable Land Management”.
The project activities are aimed at promoting and measuring success in capacity building ultimately helping to improve sustainability of land management of at least 3 million hectares.
The project website is meant to provide up-to-date information on the project implementation, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the implementation of the UNCCD in Bulgaria.

These are biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, protection of international waters, prevention of land degradation (primarily desertification and deforestation), and elimination of persistent organic pollutants.
The priority thematic areas for Bulgaria are: sustainable agriculture; development of eco tourism and mainstreaming global environment into local development and spatial planning processes in areas of globally significant biodiversity; sustainable product design engaging new approaches towards achieving use of sustainable materials for elimination of POPs by products and minimization of waste and energy use.
