The Rio Conventions
The links included here present the three Rio Conventions: UN Convention on Biological Diversity, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
Along with the links to the official websites of these conventions, links to the protocols, clearing house-mechanisms, implementation instrument of the conventions, and national focal points are included.
The links are listed thematically in the following areas: biological diversity, climate change, and desertification.
Clean Development Mechanism
cdm.unfccc.int/index.htmlmore...The clean development mechanism (CDM) defined in Article 12 provides for developed countries (Annex I Parties) to implement project activities that reduce emissions in developing countries (non-Annex I Parties), in return for certified emission reductions (CERs). The CERs generated by such project activities can be used by Annex I Parties to help meet their emissions targets under the Kyoto Protocol. Article 12 also stresses that such project activities are to assist the developing country host Parties in achieving sustainable development and in contributing to the ultimate objective of the Convention.
closeTechnology Information Clearing House
ttclear.unfccc.int/ttclear/jsp/more...This is a web-based technology information clearing house developed by secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, with support from Parties and the EGTT. It enables users to find information on: climate-friendly technology transfer projects and programmes; case studies of successful technology transfer; environmentally sound technologies and know-how, organizations and experts; methods, models, and tools to assess mitigation and adaptation options and strategies; relevant Internet sites for technology transfer; ongoing work of the Parties and the EGTT such as issues under negotiation, documents and meetings, and implementation of the technology framework.
closeJoint Implementation
ji.unfccc.int/more...A Joint Implementation mechanism is the other project-based mechanism under the Kyoto protocol. Under JI, an Annex I Party (with a commitment inscribed in Annex B of the Kyoto Protocol) may implement an emission-reducing project or a project that enhances removals by sinks in the territory of another Annex I Party (with a commitment inscribed in Annex B of the Kyoto Protocol) and count the resulting emission reduction units (ERUs) towards meeting its own Kyoto target. An Annex I Party may also authorize legal entities to participate in JI projects. The web site includes information on the projects, calls for public input and experts, along with criteria for baseline setting and monitoring, documents and news.
closeNational Focal Points
maindb.unfccc.int/public/country.pl?country=BGmore...The web site includes contact information about the Bulgarian focal points along with national reports and reviews.

UN Convention to Combat Desertification
www.unccd.intmore...According to the Convention’s text 'desertification' means land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities such as over-exploitation and inappropriate land-use as a result of poverty, political instability, deforestation, overgrazing and bad irrigation.
