MRDPW - Partner on Utilization of Geothermal Energy in Residential and Public Buildings Project under INTERREG IVC Programme

An official confirmation was received in the early October 2010 of funding of a third project under INTERREG IVC programme to promote the interregional cooperation within the EU on Utilization of the Geothermal Energy in Residential and Industrial Buildings (Project Geopower). Official project partner on Bulgarian side is DG “Strategic planning of the regional development and administrative – territorial organization”(DG SPRDATO), MRDPW and the Energy Efficiency Agency is associate partner.  
 
The main activities of the project shall include:
• Review of the practices for using of geothermal energy for industrial and public utilities in the participating regions;
• Development of publications and guidelines;
• Development of Action plan to promote wider implementatio of the geothermal energy sources as an alternative of the traditional energy sources through list of measures, proposals for legislative initiatives and financial schemes, specific to each region.

The basic beneficiaries of the plans would be the managing authorities of the operational programmes and other key national institutions responsible for the implementation of the general objectives and policies of EU in the field of the renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.
  
12 official partners from Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary, United Kingdom, Sweden, Estonia and Belgium will cooperate for the implementation of the project. The general budget of the project is 2,041,530 EUR and the approved budget for the MRDPW is 140,300 EUR (119,255 EUR funding from the European Social Fund and 21,045 EUR national co-financing).

This the third project developed in close cooperation between the Rio Conventions project and experts from DG SPRDATO as a result of the work visit in November 2007 in Cornwall region, southwest England under the Rio Conventions project and the initiated strategic partnership between MRDPW and Cornwall County Council. 

The first project developed and implemented with partners from Cornwall County Council started in October 2008 entitled Regions for Sustainable Change (RSC), (www.rscproject.org).  The main objective of the project is to develop the potential of the EU regions for adaptation to and combating with the climate changes. 12 partners are included in the project consortium: Hungary, United Kingdom, Austria, Spain, Bulgaria, Italy, Malta and Poland. The general budget of the project is 2,153,526.63 EUR and the approved budget for the MRDPW is120, 347.71 EUR.

The second project developed and implemented with partners from Cornwall County Council started in February 2010 and is entitled University Collaboration in Regional Development Spaces (UNICREDS). The main objective of the project is the high education in support of the regional development for increasing the growth and employment in less developed EU regions. 15 partners from United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Scotland and Czech Republic participate in the project. From Bulgarian side partners on the project are MRDPW and Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The partners’ organizations will focus on the development of series of specific studies in each country to exchange experience, identify good practices and create closer connections between the relevant regions, their universities and private sector to promote balanced and sustainable development of the regions. The general value of the project is 2,291,854 EUR and the approved budget for the MRDPW is 78,900 EUR.
