Partnership for green initiatives between municipalities of Sliven and Varna and Cornwall County, UK11.09.2008

On 11th and 12th of September 2008 Mr. Brian Shipman European Policy & Development Officer responsible for transnational co-operation across Europe and internationally for Cornwall County Council, conducted a work visit to the District Administrations of Sliven and Varna aiming to initiate international partnerships for regional development.
Mr. Shipman met Mrs. Hristina Cholakova – District Governor of Sliven and Mr. Christo Kontov – District Governor of Varna as well as experts from the two District Administrations to discuss specific ideas for joined projects.
The regional policy is a very popular subject in Bulgaria but it is important for us things to be happening. Since we speak in the EU framework for a Europe of the Regions, they should be empowered with more capacity and operational self sustainability Mrs. Cholakova shared during the meeting. Experts from District administration Sliven proposed two specific concepts for cooperation – development of tourism and renewable energy sources. Specific ideas for projects under the Regional Development Operations Programme were discussed with the representatives of Varna District.
General parameters of the projects discussed will be presented before the local administration in Cornwall County for discussion of possibilities for partnership development with Districts of Sliven and Varna.
The work visit of Mr. Brian Shipman is a result from the cooperation of “Regional Policy and Management Systems” Directorate with the MRDPW and Cornwall Count Council which started in November 2007 during a work visit in Cornwall County of 11 experts from the MRDPW, MoEW, Varna District Administration and NAMRB.
As a result from the successful partnership MRDPW hosted two initiatives in 2008 namely: Seminar “Bulgaria, Cornwall and South-East England in search for green regional development partnerships” and a partners meeting for development of project proposal under the EU International Cooperation Programme INTERREG IV-C
