Rotterdam Global Urban Summit 2009

The City of Rotterdam is organising the Global Urban Summit 2009, to take place in Rotterdam, on 3-4 December 2009. This conference is focused on high-quality urban development and sustainability by searching the answer of “How can cities and businesses cooperate in a ‘green' manner so there is future for large cities in post-crisis times”? Information will be exchanged on how cities deal with the challenges of current and future problems.

The conference will establish relationships between three main themes within high quality urban development: sustainability, international connections and transition towards a knowledge economy. To understand the true consequences of working on integrated sustainable area development, 9 sustainable city key components have been developed (based upon the One Planet Living guiding principles) as part of the Rotterdam Global Urban Summit. At the conference these 9 key components will be used as contributing elements for achieving standards on sustainable urban area developments. The 9 key components are:

  • Carbon neutral city;
  • City cycles;
  • City economy;
  • City redevelopment;
  • City culture and happiness;
  • City and mobility;
  • City ecology;
  • City and water;
  • City farms.

‘Global Urban Summit 2009’ covers a wide variety of projects representing the 9 key components. These projects will be discussed for a better understanding of how they are managed, financed, decided upon and fitting into the context.

The conference is geared to participants at the decision-making and managerial levels e.g. city managers, urban governors and policy makers, architects and planners, climate and transport experts, and representatives from the business community.

The event has been organised by the City of Rotterdam , the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, the Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus University Rotterdam) and the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam.
