Climate Capital Copenhagen: Exchange of Good Practices
The City of Copenhagen is hosting the Climate Summit for Mayors as a side event to the 15-th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The objective of the mayors’ summit is to demonstrate the role of cities in fighting climate change and to show the world that cities are already acting. Through a special platform, the initiatives that mayors have taken in their home cities will be showcast and presented to the media. Events, roundtable talks and high level panel discussions are all planned to be suitable for live TV transmissions.
In addition, the website of the Climate Summit for Mayors, Copenhagen 2009 offers various information about initiatives for Green House Gas emission reduction and improved energy efficiency in cities as some of the measures to act against climate change. There are results from recent studies, such as:
- the European Green City Index, rating thirty cities in Europe using a set of environmental criteria; According to the study, Copenhagen is the “greenest” city in Europe, gaining a bit before Stockholm, Oslo, Vienna, Amsterdam and Zurich. Sofia is at the 29th place in the overall rating. Eight categories of assessment were used: CO 2 emissions, energy, buildings, transport, water, waste and land use, air quality, and environmental governance (European Green City Index).
- the study of citizens’ attitude to climate change and their willingness to take action at individual level ( Summarised results from a study on citizens’ opinion to climate change );
- the initiatives that the city of Copenhagen is running in order to achieve 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2015 compared to the levels in 2005 (Climate Capital Copenhagen: the publication describes the initiatives taking place in Copenhagen leading to increased energy efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions).
