The Website of Cancun Climate Change Conference

The sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 16) and the sixth Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 6) will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from 29 November to 10 December 2010. Together with these two meetings, the subsidiary bodies and the working groups in charge of preparing the post-Kyoto agreement will meet. This is the next UN Climate Conference after Copenhagen, bringing hopes for progress in reaching a new post-2012 climate agreement.

COP16 Host Country Website

Mexico as the host country of COP 16 has already launched a special website on the event. The objective of the country as described at this website is “to build understanding among Parties to ensure that COP16/CMP6 deliver concrete and effective results to tackle the global challenge of climate change. Mexico will encourage broad participation in the conference as well as extensive dialogue in the collective search for common solutions”. Therefore along with information about the organization of the event and side-events, the website presents news and reports on the Mexico’s actions to deal with climate change and the latest development of the negotiation process.

Before the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, a couple of other events are expected to bring the negotiation process further. These are the high-level meetings in Geneva and New York in September and the last round of UN negotiations in Tianjin, China. According to WWF, during this period it is essential that governments move away from the ’all-or-nothing‘ approach at the UNFCCC, and seek breakthroughs for a balanced Cancun package in areas such as forest protection, adaptation to inevitable threats from climate change, and the beginning of real flows of finance for climate action.
