World Mayors Summit on Climate in Mexico City
The World Mayors Summit on Climate (WMSC) will be held in Mexico City on 21 November 2010. The participants – mayors from all over the world will have the opportunity to sign the voluntary Mexico City Climate Pact, which has two main aims. The first is to send a message to the international community, just before the 16th UN Conference on Climate Change (29 November – 9 December, Cancun, Mexico), on the important role the cities have in fighting climate change. The second aim of the Pact and the Mayors Summit is to establish a set of voluntary commitments for cities and local authorities aimed at mitigating the green-house gas emissions at local level.
Already initiatives exist that are going to support the new mechanism of commitments. Thus the Bonn Center for Local Climate Action and Reporting (carbonn) will prepare and operate the Cities Climate Registry, where the signatories of the Mexico City Pact will set forth their commitments. The World Bank will organize a Workshop on Financing for Climate Actions in Cities, to explore different direct financing mechanisms for cities which can be built to support the execution of commitments adopted by cities in the Mexico City Pact. Finally, the “Fundación Pensar. Planeta, Política, Persona” (Pensar Foundation) acts as a coordinator of all the intellectual, political and organizational efforts for the WMSC and the process of signing the Pact in Mexico City.
The WMSC is convened by Mexico City in cooperation with the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC), ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).
The WMSC falls within the context of a series of prior efforts undertaken by cities and local authorities to take action against climate change in the world, such as the World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement (2007), the Local Government Climate Roadmap (2007), the publication of the Copenhagen World Catalogue of City Commitments to Combat Climate Change (2009), the Copenhagen Climate Communiqué (2009), the Dunkerque 2010 Call on Climate Action (2010), the Bonn Declaration of the Mayors Adaptation Forum (2010) and the Climate Summits of Major Cities of the C40, among many other.
